Fatima Yasmin Appointed As First Female Finance Secretary of Bangladesh

Fatima Yasmin, a career civil servant, recently joined the Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Finance, as Finance Secretary. She is the first women Secretary of ERD. Before this position, she was Vice-Chairman, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Ministry of Commerce, and Director General, Institute of Public Finance (IPF). In this regard, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on June 16, 2022. As a result, Fatima Yasmin became the first woman finance secretary in the country’s history. Fatima Yasmin joined the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance on February 23 2020. 

Fatima Yasmin joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in 1991. She holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka. She also has a bachelor’s degree in development economics from the Australian National University.

In addition, Ms. Fatima attended the US State Department’s Hubert H. at Rutgers University in the United States. Furthermore, she has completed the Executive Successful Program Executive Program from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Unilever Will Collect 1,000 Tonnes of Plastic

Unilever Bangladesh Ltd (UBL) and CIRCULAR, a social purpose-driven organization involved in plastic waste management, joined hands to collect 1,000 tonnes of plastic from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in the next year. The plastic wastes (flexible, single-use, and rigid) will be collected from the two city corporations of Dhaka from June 2022 to May 2023, Unilever said in a statement. According to World Bank data, less than one-third (30 percent) of the plastic waste produced in Bangladesh is collected, and only 37 percent of the collected plastic waste is recycled, while the remaining is landfilled, among which an estimated 24,032–36,047 tonnes are dumped in the river system. To prevent this environmental catastrophe caused by plastic waste pollution, Unilever Bangladesh believes it is essential to build a sustainable circular loop that contributes to the circular economy and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

UBL, the country’s oldest and largest fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, has built multi-stakeholder models with diversified partners to collect 10,000 tonnes of plastic from the environment by 2023. Therefore, the latest plastic collection collaboration with CIRCULAR is a testament to its continuous progression towards UBL’s commitment to improving the health of the planet and the environment by collecting more plastics.

In 2021, UBL launched the biggest municipal-backed plastic waste collection project in Bangladesh in collaboration with Narayanganj City Corporation and UNDP. In addition, Unilever, in partnership with CIRCULAR, will work on building a sustainable and equitable reverse supply chain for the recovery of all kinds of post-consumed plastics waste. Mr. Zaved Akhtar, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Unilever Bangladesh Limited, said: “Our value is to do business sustainably and leave behind a thriving world for future generations.”

“We want to ensure that plastic stays in the economy and out of the environment. As a responsible company, we are committed to playing our part. However, plastic pollution is too big for us to solve alone. We believe this is a collective responsibility, and each stakeholder needs to play an active role,” he said.

Bangladesh Canada Friendship Society Organized Bangladesh Festival-2022 

BCFS is going to arrange Bangladesh Festival on August 6 and 7, 2022, the first of its kind in Nova Scotia and Canada. It is a celebration of Bangladeshi Culture, Art, Food, Clothing, Dance, and many more traditions, which represent the true colors of Bangladesh and Bangladeshi Canadians. So, the press release is about Bangladesh Canada Friendship Society Arranged Bangladesh Festival-2022.

The critical activities of the Bangladesh Festival will include live performances by local and national artists showcasing Bangladeshi arts and culture and 25 stalls by budding local entrepreneurs featuring traditional South Asian food, clothing, jewelry, arts, books, and handicrafts. Additionally, there will be live entertainment arrangements for kids, including a bouncy castle and clown show. Finally, a signature piece of the event will be an open concert featuring local and national artists of Bangladeshi and other origins from all over Canada, showcasing their artistic talents in singing and dancing.  

The primary goal of the Bangladesh Festival is to provide a positive forum for all Nova Scotians to come together and experience the rich cultural heritage of South Asia and how such a potpourri of diversity enriches the cosmopolitan mosaic of Canada. By exhibiting the core cultural values and symbols of our community and organization, the event hopes to provide an inspiring and inclusive environment for various communities to learn from and appreciate each other’s heritage. Our commitment to equity, diversity, tolerance, justice, and a society free from all forms of discrimination will be evident in all aspects of the organization of this event.  

This festival is open to the public, and we believe that visitors will travel from across Canada to experience South Asian culture, food, music, dance, and other activities on a major scale for the first time in the history of the province of Nova Scotia.

The Bangladesh Canada Friendship Society (BCFS) is a registered non-profit community organization with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies of Nova Scotia, dedicated to celebrating Canada’s diverse, multicultural mosaic and promoting equity, inclusion, and mutual respect toward making Nova Scotia a better place for everyone. It is the premier community organization representing a diverse body of professionals, new immigrants, and students of Bangladeshi origin.
